Henceforward was founded in 2021. But the experience behind it didn’t start then. Steven and Carl-Peter both entered the industry in 2003 — which means between them they’ve advised clients through two global financial crises, a pandemic, multiple commodity cycles, and the particular complexity of building wealth in South Africa while keeping options open internationally. That’s 45 years of combined experience, and most of it was spent inside larger institutions watching how those institutions’ incentives shaped the advice clients received.

Henceforward exists because we believed something more straightforward was possible. A firm where the fee structure, the client relationships, and the advice itself are all pointed in the same direction.

The observation was simple: the standard South African advice model charges a percentage of assets under management. That means an adviser with R500 million under management earns the same whether their planning is excellent or average — and earns more as markets rise, regardless of anything they actually did. We didn’t think that was a good model for clients. So we changed it.

Flat fees, agreed upfront, calibrated to the complexity of your situation … not the size of your balance sheet. It’s a straightforward idea. It’s surprisingly rare in practice.
